Newcastle legend Keegan fears players becoming detatched from fans

Newcastle United and Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan fears football is moving away from it's fans.

Keegan is critical of the behaviour and attitude of some top line players.

He told the Sunday Herald: "Football is in danger of moving too far away from the fans.

"There is still all the badge kissing and the statements about loyalty and how the fans really matter. But sometimes actions do not reflect this. The simple truth is that fans are the lifeblood of the game and football runs the risk of alienating them.

"This can be brushed off as a cliche, but the fan is the main asset in the professional game. Some say that television is the paymaster but they, in turn, are sponsored by the fans. Television companies, too, will be less keen to get involved if there are swathes of empty places in the stands. Football's main challenge is to make these fans believe they count, make them feel they matter for something."
