Newcastle legend Albert excited by Belgium's "golden generation"

Newcastle United legend Philippe Albert is excited by the current generation of Belgium players.

Belgium have been one of the stand-out teams in qualifying for next summer's World Cup in Brazil, dominating a group containing Croatia, Serbia, Scotland and Wales.

"This team is something special," Albert told the People.

"Players like [Eden] Hazard, [Thomas] Vermaelen, [Jan] Vertonghen, [Sebastien]Pocognoli... they're fantastic players and technically they're as good as any in the world.

"You can really call them a 'Golden Generation'.

"We've been through a very hard period - 12 years where we've been watching these tournaments at home.

"But now we have a team that can play in every big tournament for the next 10 years.

"We've got very, very young players coming through as well. Over the next 15 to 20 years Belgium will be among the best ten teams in the world. Whether England can say the same thing I'm not too sure.

"When I was playing in the Premier League there were two or three foreign players in every team. Now you can have 11 foreigners in the team - that can't be good for English football or the national team.

"That's the problem, that's why they're not competing.

"I really hope England get to the World Cup, but if they do they will arrive at the World Cup tired. That tiredness has been a constant problem for the English footballers when a major tournament comes around."
