Newcastle United have emerged as surprised contenders to sign Jermain Defoe this summer.

The Sun reports that the Magpies have joined West Ham United and AFC Bournemouth in the race for the Sunderland striker.

Defoe can leave the Stadium of Light on a free if the Black Cats are relegated and it is understood that their Tyne-Wear rivals are ready to swoop.
