Newcastle Jets star Culina pushing for Australian team

Jason Culina says he is intent on pushing back into the Australian national team setup after sustaining injury whilst on duty in January. The 31-year old Newcastle Jets midfielder has been sidelined since injuring his knee at the Asian Cup in Qatar and he now wants to get back to full fitness and have a strong beginning to the upcoming A-League season so he can again link up with the Socceroos for 2014 World Cup qualifying.

''It was unfortunate the way things went for me in Qatar and it's never good to miss that much football,'' the former PSV Eindhoven and Gold Coast United man told The Age.

''But I have started training again and, in a way, the long break between seasons is helpful … I have five or six weeks now in which I can get right and, hopefully, I should be OK for that first match with the Heart.''

And Culina also commented on the recent signings of Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton made by A-League rivals Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC respectively.

"I am glad firstly to see my friends come back, but I am glad when any Socceroos come to play here. It will all be a boost for the league," he added.
