Newcastle Jets midfielder Fiorentini hit with two-match ban

Newcastle Jets import Marcello Fiorentini has been given a two-match ban by the independent Match Review Panel.

The Italian midfielder was sent off in the 62nd minute of his side's 2-0 loss to Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night for lashing out at opponent Marvin Angulo.

A challenge occurred in the centre of the pitch which brought Angulo, Fiorentini and another Jets player together, all attempting to clear the ball to their team's advantage. As the ball popped back up into the air after contact was made, Fiorentini kicked out at Angulo, felling the Costa Rican.

Referee Strebre Delovski had no hesitation in sending Fiorentini off despite the protests from the Newcastle players.

Fiorentini was found to have committed the offence of "Assault on a Player (e.g. violent conduct when not challenging for the ball)" on Angulo and the MRP proposed a sanction of two matches.

The player has until 12:00 noon (AEDT) today to accept the proposed sanction or refer the matter to a hearing by the FFA Disciplinary Committee.
