Newcastle Jets heavily linked with ex-Villa, Man City striker Vassell

Newcastle Jets have not yet been successful in luring a former England international to the A-League.

The Hunter Valley club have been closely linked with former Aston Villa and Manchester City striker Darius Vassell but have yet to agree terms with the 30-year old and may have to wait until January to bring in a new goalscorer according to coach Branko Culina.

Newcastle have also been linked with former Everton and Arsenal starlet Francis Jeffers.

"There is a lot of names being bandied around," Culina told the Newcastle Heral. "We are not in position to comment, because we have not really got any further.

"One minute you think you are getting closer, then you find out, because of the different agents involved, different demands have been made.

"Talks have stalled with one or two who we were very keen on and we have a couple of others coming back to us.

"It is not that easy to find the right person. There are not too many who meet our criteria that are available right now. There will be in January and that may be a better option for us."

Vassell most recently played with Turkish club Ankaragucu whilst Jeffers was recently released by League One outfit Sheffield Wednesday.
