Newcastle Jets' Brockie: Freak own goal was our downfall

Newcastle Jets striker Jeremy Brockie admits the goal that forced his side to draw with Melbourne Heart on Friday night was a freak happening.

After Brockie had put the Jets in front on the hour-mark, Heart managed to grab an equaliser when Jets young gun Ben Kantarovski went to clear the danger area after Michael Marrone had made a run toward the box but somehow, the ball managed to loop over goalkeeper Ben Kennedy and hit the back of the net.

Brockie said his side deserved more than a draw and pout the own goal down to a pure luck for the Heart.

"We felt we deserved more than the draw, we had enough chances in the first half to score more than the one we got," the 22-year old told tribalfootball.com.

"I think it was just one of the freak goals that can happen to anyone at anytime, on another day those ones can go 10 rows back into the stands."

The New Zealand international's first home game for his new club marked another milestone for him - his first Newcastle Jets goal - and he was delighted he was able to do it in front of a decent crowd.

"It was a good feeling to score my first goal for the Jets. It's always nice to get off the mark early and hopefully there are more to come in the next few weeks," he added.

"We had a great crowd for the first game of the season that made a lot of noise until the final whistle and hopefully we entertained them enough for them plus more to turn up for our next home game."
