Georginio Wijnaldum insists Newcastle United are treating the cups seriously this season.
The Magpies have not lifted any silverware since the 1955 FA Cup - apart from their Championship win in 2010 - and new midfielder Wijnaldum has made it clear that it is high time for the club to go into both cups competitions with clear goals in mind.
Wijnaldum, who joined from PSV this summer, says he is not about to sit back and treat the Capital One Cup with contempt as the Toon prepare for Tuesday night's second round clash with Northampton Town.
"I want to play in everything," he told the Chronicle.
"I once had an injury for seven months and when my body tells me I can play – I want to play."
He added: "We are going to fight hard for the first game this week.
"Everything is important to me here.
"If you have a chance to win a trophy you must go for it.
"As a football player you must also have the confidence to think you can win a lot of trophies.
"It is an opportunity for us to win a trophy so we must go for it."
