Newcastle hero Townsend confident of survival - 'We have the points on the board'

Andros Townsend has stated that Newcastle United are confident of surviving relegation.

The Magpies were handed a huge lifeline in their battle against the drop following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on the weekend and the hero on the day was winger Andros Townsend.

Townsend scored the winner with a sensational free-kick and now the England international has gone on to reveal that the Newcastle squad is confident of surviving the drop at the expense of Tyne-Wear rivals Sunderland and second bottom Norwich City.

Speaking about his goal, he said: "It's a funny story.

"When I was thrown into the Under-21s by Spurs, a couple of us would stay for hours just practising free-kicks, let foot and right until the fitness coaches came and told us to save our legs.

"All that stuff pays off when you score in front of 52,000 people to help your team get three points.

"We have got the points on board and are above the relegation zone. It's now up to the other teams to pick up the points.

"We've done our job and will continue to do our job and hopefully the others will drop points."
