Newcastle have Carver to thank for netting Liverpool fee for Carroll

Newcastle United have John Carver for netting £35 million for new Liverpool striker Andy Carroll.

Now in his second spell at St James' Park, Carver was the director of the Newcastle academy when he first met the tall, skinny kid from Gateshead.

A Newcastle source told the People: "When Andy first came here he was a left-back. But JC and fellow Academy man Jimmy Nelson saw him more as a centre-forward.

"That's why Newcastle are £35m better off today."
