Newcastle United are furious with Manchester City over their knockdown bid for goalkeeper Shay Given.

The Evening Chronicle says United have received a bid of less than £4m for Given from Manchester City, according to club sources.

And while that is an offer which they consider to be an insult, the fact that City have made an official move underlines that other clubs are circling ready to pounce for one of United's prize assets.

A United source said: "We received a bid for Shay in writing and we dismissed it out of hand."
