Newcastle fullback Ferguson happy choosing soccer over Gaelic football

Shane Ferguson says his new five-year deal at Newcastle United has justified his decision to choose soccer over Gaelic football.

Ferguson had to make the decision at 15 years of age.

"Things have gone really well for me, and I reckon I certainly made the right choice," he told nufc.co.uk.

"I always said and always knew that football had to come first, and that I would have to give up Gaelic.

"But I did play a lot of Gaelic back home and we won the county championships with my school, St. Mary's in Limavady, as well as the Ulster Championships with Faunvale. In all, I have 15 Gaelic football medals back home.

"I loved playing Gaelic football - it's great on adrenalin and even though I'm not the biggest lad I was fast and pretty good at it."
