The former Arsenal star had been targeted by Magpies boss Kevin Keegan but it now appears as though French outfit AS Monaco have beaten Toon in the race to sign Reyes.
The Spanish international is likely to complete a £5.5 million move to Monaco within the next few days.
The 24-year old apparently rejected personal terms at St James' Park.
