Newcastle eyeing Basel forward Oberlin

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is looking at ways to strengthen his club's attack as they bid to stay in the Premier League.

Newcastle are currently 18th in the league, with only 15 points from 18 games. The club has only managed to score 16 goals all season, a tally that is among the worst in the league. And Benitez hopes that one or two transfers could help with that problem.

The club are being linked with a January move for Dimitri Oberlin, the forward from Red Bull Salzburg.

Oberlin is a 20-year-old striker who is currently spending the first half of the season on loan at Basel. He was impressive in the side's Champions League win over Manchester United this season, and was even watched by scouts in some games.

However, the 20-million-pound valuation of Oberlin could present some issues to Benitez, with the manager unclear on how much money he can spend in January. It will require some sales, with the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mo Diame prime candidates to seek moves for regular game time.
