Ajax centre-back Joel Veltman is being tracked by Newcastle United.

The Evening Chronicle says Newcastle will work the Dutch transfer market after the success of former Feyenoord fullback Daryl Janmaat last season.

The Dutch connection played a key part in Steve McClaren getting the Newcastle job, Graham Carr and the new head coach on good terms from the former's time as boss of FC Twente.

Veltman has been one of the defensive targets scouted in the run-up to this summer.
