Middlesbrough and Sunderland sent a strong selection of stars including the likes of Stewart Downing, David Wheater, Gareth Southgate, Anton Ferdinand and Craig Gordon.
And a Magpies source said: "It was embarrassing. Every other club turned up in force with loads of players."
