Newcastle United have eased their relegation fears by moving nine points clear of the drop zone courtesy of a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Stoke City.

The Magpies fell behind when Jon Walters converted from the penalty spot in the 67th minute but Yohan Cabaye's sublime free-kick five minutes later pulled them back on level terms before Papiss Cisse produced an injury-time winner which lifted plenty of pressure from manager Alan Pardew's shoulders.

"To be honest, I think we are done. You have got to get 40 points, of course, but we are now seven points from that with nine games left, and you would expect this team to follow through with the standard it has got now to be able to do that," he said.

"But the bigger picture is to finish strongly like Everton [last season] and take it into next year, and we are showing some good signs in terms of doing that."
