Newcastle United are desperate to unload £60,000-a-week midfielder Alan Smith, 31, before the Football League loan window closes next month.

Smith has only played four minutes of first-team football this season.

His old Toon boss Sam Allardyce could take him to West Ham United, while former club Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers are also keen.
