Newcastle United remain interested in Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce.

The Times says privately, Newcastle have cast doubt on Dave Whelan's contention that Bruce would not work for them under Ashley; the Wigan chairman is a longstanding business rival of the sportswear retailer.

Bruce would come under consideration if Newcastle beat the drop - and Joe Kinnear decided against continuing as manager.
