Newcastle United have confirmed that Northumbria Police are investigating racist abuse aimed at young striker Sammy Ameobi.
A racist comment on Twitter was directed at the 19-year old and the Magpies have released a statement on the matter, saying the police were now involved.
"Newcastle United are aware of a racist remark that was directed towards Sammy Ameobi via Twitter on Sunday evening," read the statement on the club's official website.
"The club and Sammy have reported the matter to the police, who are now dealing with the incident.
"The racist comment is wholly unacceptable. Newcastle United will not tolerate racism of any kind and will take the strongest possible action against those responsible."
