Newcastle coach van Egmond has plans for Hoffman

Newcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond hopes to use striker Jason Hoffman in varying roles in Wednesday's Asian Champions League knockout clash with Pohang Steelers.

The Jets are in Korea for the round of 16 match at Pohang's Steelyard with van Egmond worried about the height of his team.

He hopes Hoffman can be the man to worry the Steelers with his height to cause problems at both ends of the ground.

"We were talking about the fact we don't have the greatest amount of height defensively or in attack," van Egmond said.

"It's about him being more dominant because he's such a tall boy, but he's got to utilise that height and make sure he's defensively strong and picking out one of the their better headers on the ball and, on the attacking side, he's got to be one of our main threats.

"He's got a lot to offer because of his vertical size and jump, and he needs to be better in those situations."
