Newcastle clinch dramatic win over Beijing Guoan
Newcastle Jets have come from behind to produce a stunning victory over Beijing Guoan in the Asian Champions League.
Played at a below-par EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle, it was an Australian who put the visiting team ahead in the 69th minute.
Ryan Griffiths, brother of former Jets duo Joel and Adam, finished from 10 yards to break the deadlock and give Beijing the momentum.
When the scores remained that way until the late in the piece, it seemed like the Chinese club would take the three points home but the drama had not yet begun.
Two minutes from time, Jets striker Sasho Petrovski equalised when he volleyed home from the back post after Tarek Elrich’s cross.
Surely a draw was the fair outcome, but the Jets pushed forward again.
Defender Ljubo Milicevic produced a quality through ball for young striker Sean Rooney who tucked it away nicely with his left foot to give the A-League club a deserved victory deep in injury time.
