Newcastle United chief scout Graham Carr has been a regular at Montpellier games this season.
Toon boss Alan Pardew is having Montpellier midfielder Younes Belhanda tracked ahead of the January market.
The Morocco international is a favourite of Carr's and is under consideration in the event Pardew is forced to part with Yohan Cabaye.
