After seeing Alan Shearer strut his stuff in Newcastle United's open training session yesterday, managing director Derek Llambias admits he should've signed him to a player-coaching contract!
"We had to weigh up the situation," Llambias said. "We were in a position where we had to make a move, and he was the best move.
"He was the only person we approached - we felt that was our only choice.
"He's a straight talker, and I like that about him - there's no nonsense. He's got respect, and he's made a difference. He's loved in this town, and so he should be.
"It's been a tremendous boost for everybody in the town and round the stadium. The players are very upbeat, and looking forward to the next game."
Llambias added: "I watched the whole session yesterday - I should have signed him as player-manager!"
