Newcastle United managing director Derek Llambias insists they did all they could to convince Jose Enrique to turn down Liverpool.

Enrique joined Liverpool in August.

"We offered him what we thought was a good deal. But he wanted to play for the national team and play in Europe," Llambias told the Evening Chronicle.

"At that time he didn't see us getting there."
