Newcastle United director of football Joe Kinnear insists he and manager Alan Pardew get along.

Kinnear's shock appointment has cast doubt on Pardew's long-term future on Tyneside.

Kinnear told the Sunday Mirror: "There is a mutual respect between us. I have sat down with Alan, one on one, on two or three occasions and he is fully supportive of my role.

"We both have the same aim - to bring success to ­Newcastle. I feel confident we will have a great working relationship and one that will benefit Newcastle.

"He had to perform a ­juggling act last season ­because of Europa League commitments and injuries. Now the plan is to give him more quality in his squad."
