Newcastle United will compete with Everton for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.
The Daily Mail says Newcastle have stepped into the battle for McCarthy as they look to beat Everton to the Wigan midfielder.
Wigan want at least £15m for the 22-year-old but both clubs are looking to open with offers of around £8m.
Everton ideally need to sell first while Newcastle are awaiting an improved offer from Arsenal for Yohan Cabaye.
