Newcastle United chairman Chris Mort insists new owner Mike Ashley has no regrets about his takeover.

Mort admits they've been surprised by the level of debt, but also told the Evening Chronicle: "Don't forget Mike has spent the whole of his working life in the sports world, and he is perfectly capable of managing the assets and the businesses he's got.

"Clearly he is looking for me to do this day-to-day, and that's absolutely fine.

"We talk on a regular basis and he has absolutely no regrets at coming into Newcastle.

"He thinks it is a fabulous club with massive potential - and that's why we both came here."
