Newcastle boss: Smith paying for reputation

Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce believes Alan Smith's reputation is hurting him.

Smith has copped an automatic suspension after being booked in yesterday's 3-2 defeat of Everton and Allardyce told the Shields Gazette: "You sometimes wonder if people's reputations get them booked, rather than fouls that they may or may not commit.

"Certainly, for me, Alan has been reckless and deserved to be booked this season - but not this time.

"Now he's out of the Tottenham game after picking up a suspension for five bookings.

"That's a disappointment, especially given how well he played up front.

"He did everything apart from score. He linked really, really well with Oba (Obafemi Martins)."
