The powerful 20-year-old, like Shearer a local lad, scored either side of half-time to give Shearer something to think about ahead of a game in which his side will have to endure a concerted aerial assault.
Shearer said: "I asked Andy to go out and show me what he could do, and he did that.
"Like all of the lads who came from the first team, he showed a great appetite and a great attitude."
Carroll himself was delighted to have made an impression on the man in whose footsteps he hopes to follow.
He said: "Hopefully I will get a chance between now and the end of the season.
"All I have got to do is keep working hard on my fitness. I have had a couple of injury problems in the past few weeks, and it's good to be back."
