Newcastle manager Alan Shearer admitted that midfielder Joey Barton deserved the red card he received in the loss to Liverpool.

Barton lunged at Xabi Alonso with a two-footed challenge, receiving a straight red and the decision was the right one according to Shearer.

"He deserved to be sent off, he has let himself and the club down," he said.

"He was not unlucky, the referee was spot-on. There was no need for him to do that in such a position."
