Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew admits he was keen on new Manchester United signing Wilfried Zaha.
Pardew has revealed he chased Crystal Palace's Zaha - but had no chance against the might of Man United.
He said: "There is slightly more value in the French market. Obviously we have exploited that.
"I like Zaha - I wanted to bring him to this club.
"But seriously, we had no chance. We just can't pay that.
"We have bought four players for that. It suited our needs better to strengthen several positions for that sort of money."
