Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew admits Nile Ranger has a long way to go to be considered a serious first teamer.

The 21-year-old started the game in France against Bordeaux on Thursday night and while the striker worked hard enough, he looked rusty after spending months in the wilderness.

Pardew told the Evening Chronicle: “It’s difficult when you haven’t played a lot of football.

“He competed and did the job that was asked.

“He almost got a goal at the end.

“He’s got a long road, he knows that.”
