Newcastle boss Pardew pushes for January signings

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is convinced he needs to strengthen his squad this winter.

The Magpies have fallen to 15th on the table following last season's fifth-place finish and Pardew is keen to spend some money in January to improve that standing.

"I need a couple of players and if you think I am not asking for them, then you are seriously mistaken," Pardew said.

"I need a couple of players, I think, in this group, and maybe even three. Whether we can get them across the line on a financial front remains to be seen."

Pardew added that owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias are aware he wants to sign some new faces and hopes they can find a way to open the cheque book after failing to spend in the summer.

"Of course they are," Pardew said.

"Mike openly would say that in the summer, we should have bought another player, he would actually argue that himself."
