Yoan Gouffran is pushing to play as striker for Newcastle United.

Toon boss Alan Pardew has admitted Gouffran is making a case to play in his preferred central striking role as the build-up to the Magpies' opening game of the season against Manchester City.

Pardew told the Evening Chronicle: "I think all strikers want to be the No 9 who gets the goals and plays through the middle.

"That's a very important role for this team.

"Gouff has shown that he can give us quality in that area."
