Newcastle boss Pardew plans to get more fitness into disappointing Ben Arfa

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew admits Hatem Ben Arfa's fitness levels are disappointing.

The French winger has battled to get back to full tilt after being struck down by a hamstring injury in December but Pardew expected him to be further along than he is now.

The Magpies boss is keen to get Ben Arfa back in his line-up as soon as possible but is aware that he is not quite ready, especially for Saturday's trip to Swansea City.

"I have to say his condition has disappointed me this week, and we will be working hard in the next few days to get him up to speed because he lacks a bit of fitness, for sure," said the Toon boss.

"I just think it's something we need to push him on at. His upper body strength is there, but we want to work on his general fitness. I think that needs to improve."
