Newcastle boss Pardew labels Chelsea win a 'special day' for Alnwick

Alan Pardew was thrilled for rookie goalkeeper Jak Alnwick following his winning debut for Newcastle United on Saturday.

The 21-year old gloveman came off the bench at half-time of the Magpies' 2-1 home win over league leaders Chelsea after Rob Elliot was forced off with injury.

Alnwick conceded late to Didier Drogba, after Papiss Cisse had scored twice for the Toon, but his first senior outing drew praise from Pardew who noted the magnitude the performance against the previously undefeated league leaders.

"For us today, (it is) a special day," Pardew told BT Sport 1.

"It's a special day for Jak, a special day for a lot of our players. At the end there was a chance, I think Drogba left it, and we had two players blocking the shot flying in and that sort of summed us up today."
