Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew gave Hatem Ben Arfa every chance to make tonight's squad for their clash with Arsenal.

The Evening Chronicle says United sources insist the midfield ace has been at the club's Benton base this week and was given the chance to put himself in contention for a squad place against Arsenal.

Ben Arfa has not travelled with Newcastle for tonight's clash at the Emirates Stadium.

United are not convinced Ben Arfa is in the right condition to play week in, week out and feel the former Lyon man is carrying too much weight.
