Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew expects a cagey start to the January market.

Pardew does hope, however, to be busy next month.

When asked if his current "strongest XI" needed major surgery, he told the Evening Chronicle: "It's not just that. It's what is going through on the market at the moment.

"Teams don't want to make changes unless they are absolutely needed.

"And there aren't many teams with players on the market who would get into our team."
