Newcastle boss Pardew defends Kinnear transfer efforts

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has again defended football director Joe Kinnear over their lack of summer signings.

Toon lost out to Fulham for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent yesterday.

Pardew said: "We would like to get one or two more transfers in. It is always frustrating for manager because you want the best players you can get but we have a strong squad, and we did some business last January that has put us in good fettle.

"Joe's position is that he is here to make sure transfers come in, he really has the role Derek Llambias had, and he has worked hard and so far it is working ok.

"I don't see any late business for us but we do need another striker in. We need a sound backroom with our strikers, so in the short term we need another striker."
