Newcastle boss Pardew confident man-managing Barton, Carroll

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is confident man-managing Andy Carroll and Joey Barton.

Pardew, though, knows that keeping them rocking on the pitch is only half the battle as the duo spend far too much time in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

But the St James' Park chief is adamant he can handle them.

He said: "I've had to deal with the likes of Danny Mills and Ben Thatcher in the past, a couple of hairy ones so to speak.

"What you have to say to them is to treat them how they want to be treated. They play the game with a pace and a passion and at a level that sometimes tips them over the edge.

"What you've got to be is honest with them and say at this point 'It's wrong and I don't want to see that'.

"It's a drip-feed effect on the training ground and that's what I'll do with Joey.

"I've only been here a week but Joey's attitude and everything about him so far has been excellent. Everything about him so far has been spot on and he was one of the best players on Saturday.

"I hope I can keep them on the straight and narrow. It isn't going to come from me, it's going to come from within. I'm going to set the example and Joey and Andy need to understand that's what we want to see from them - those little disciplines.

"Andy's a terrific lad, level headed with a big future in front of him. It'll be a case of him at times making mistakes and admitting to that and learning from them.

"He seems to have done that over this first half of the season. The example for everybody here of course is the attitude of the senior players. If I can get that among all of them they we will have a good chance of having a good season."
