Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew admits any new signing must have the resolve to handle being a Toon player.
Pardew concedes the goldfish bowl environment on Tyneside can be tough.
He said: "You must listen to your staff. Our first-team coach Steve Stone said we've signed players who haven't been big enough to play for the club.
"At West Ham it was similar. Their fans are critical at times and can destroy players.
"I took Hayden Mullins from Crystal Palace who didn't start well but he had the character to see it through.
"It's the same at Newcastle. You must make sure the players have that resolve about them."
