Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is chasing Burnley striker Danny Ings.
His future with the Premier League newcomers is far from certain and he could be the subject of transfer bids as early as the New Year.
Pardew admitted: "I didn't say no (to being interested), I said in the past we've not made any inquiries or anything substantial.
"He is a player who is impressing at the moment. I know that Eddie Howe took him to Burnley and he was always praising him, so he's someone I've always kept my eye on."
He added: "We get linked with all sorts of players, I don't know if he's been linked with us but we certainly haven't bid or made an offer for him in a previous window.
"He's a Burnley player and I think they would find it disrespectful that you would ask that question."
