Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren says Louis van Gaal is the right man in charge of Manchester United.

Newcastle earned a point at United on Saturday.

"Anybody coming in would find it difficult because Manchester United is an institution and it was run by Sir Alex," said McClaren. "But I think Louis van Gaal is the best man – if anyone can turn it around, he can.

"I looked from the outside and felt it needed someone of his stature and character to come in here. I've seen him do it in Holland and Germany.

"He started at Bayern Munich and the first six months were not very good but then he built and won the league.

"It will be totally different because there's a new philosophy here. That takes time to bed in and grow."
