Newcastle boss Hughton offers Campbell new contract carrot

Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton is convinced new signing Sol Campbell wants to play beyond his current contract.

The 35-year-old joined on a 12-month deal after his latest Arsenal contract expired. It is a straight arrangement without additional options, but Hughton feels trying to earn another will be a strong motivation.

"The challenges are all there," Hughton, who saw the defender come through Tottenham Hotspur's youth team, told The Journal.

"I know the type of individual Sol is and I think he will be looking at it and if it is a good year for him, anything can happen. The reason he has come is the type of challenge it presents and the stature of the club. Knowing Sol he will want those challenges to continue for as long as possible."
