Newcastle boss Hughton has funds for new striker ahead of Carroll hearing

Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton will get funds for a new striker if Andy Carroll is jailed in the New Year.

Hughton's been promised that financial resources are available for him to sign at least one new player in January irrespective of the outcome of Carroll's trial.

The England Under-21 star faces a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on October 25.

However, owner Mike Ashley is determined that the club's future - no matter what verdict is delivered - will be safeguarded by having an alternative strategy.

The Sunday Mirror says word inside St James' is that possible temporary back-up for Carroll is already on the boardroom radar even if that is in the shape of a loan signing.

Hughton said: "Ideally, we would have liked the trial out of the way sooner than October. But we will continue to support Andy."
