Hughton does not want to see Gutierrez suffer from the effects of the tournament in South Africa following on from United's marathon trek in the Coca-Cola Championship.
He told the Evening Chronicle: "What he will do is come back later than the rest.
"It's important that he comes back injury-free, and we hope he has a good World Cup.
"The most important thing is that he comes back injury-free - that's a must.
"We, of course, will have to make decisions regarding when he comes back, depending on how far he goes in the competition."
