Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez says Jamaal Lascelles still needs to work on winning a call-up to the England squad.
Benitez hauled the 23-year-old in for one-to-one talks this week, in a bid to keep pushing him to greater heights.
In a challenge to Lascelles, he said: “Is he ready for England? He is someone who has the potential.
“He has to work the way he is doing now and improve. How much he will improve I don't know, but he has the potential and I am positive.
“He is a big lad and has a lot of the attributes. He can be successful in the Premier League but is still a young player.
“But when players are doing well I like to say to them: Be wary. I say it is important to concentrate on your jobs. I have years of experience. It is the most difficult thing when you are doing well and everyone is praising you.
“Sometimes if you are young, you lose your focus. I like to remind them it is the way to continue to impress.
“I had another conversation with him this week when we talked about commitment, work rate, concentration, all these things. I think he is happy with this approach. He is doing it anyway. In terms of mentality he is fine, but I am trying to improve things in his game."
