Newcastle boss Benitez: Ashley presence? I wish he could score!

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez insists the presence of owner Mike Ashley wasn't a distraction for their 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

Supporters vented their anger about his running of the club during the stalemate but also backed their side for long periods on a testing afternoon.

Benitez was asked after the game if he had spoke to the owner.

He said: “Not really, I was talking with the media at the time. If the owner wants to support the team that's OK.

“If the owner can be on the pitch and score a couple of goals it would be better!"

Benitez then praised the fans for their backing of his players.

He went on: “If we want to be stronger we need the fans behind us.

“Our fans away have been outstanding, no doubt about that. Even if we make mistakes even if we miss chances, even if I make the wrong calls, they have to support the players because it's the best way for us to stay in the Premier League."
