Newcastle avoid Luque payout

Newcastle United have avoided having to cough up £1.6 million to former forward Albert Luque in a Spanish court.

Luque cost Newcastle £10m when he moved from Deportivo La Coruna in 2005. However, as part of his contract with Deportivo, the player claimed he was owed 15 per cent of the fee or £1.6m.

Both clubs fought the case, insisting the other side had to pay, and Judge Manuel Carballo Garcia found for Luque but decreed that Deportivo would meet the cost. Luque started only six Premier League games in two years with Newcastle.
